EL DORADO: 67 degrees, fairly clear, 3 feet low. Outlook: Maynard’s Bait Shop reports: crappies good on minnows in the timber; channel catfish good on liver; black bass fair on plastic worms in the timber.

El Dorado
A few weeks ago the shad were moving a lot and walleye was being caught around 22-26 inches between 5-7 pounds using worms or minnows. A good place is around the railroad track area of the lake too. Closer to the docks the shad have been moving and have had some good catches that include flatheads from 7-11 pounds, walleye from 22-26 inches long, and some crappie over 15 inches.

I'm going to try to catch some trout in the river below the lake as trout season starts on Sunday.

Cheney
Cheney Island has had a lot of pelicans on it and the catfish are all around there. There has been a few using mostly cut bait (white perch) to catch them. There has also been some reports of walleye by the dam using crank bait too.

Council Grove
A few weeks ago a 42 pound flathead was caught but other than that, not a lot going on and it has been fairly slow.

El Dorado
Not much fishing going on with the cold snap – lake is down about 5 feet. The water clarity is good and the ducks & geese are moving in.

Has anyone fished El Dorado Lake lately? I'm looking to get out but ain't made it yet but hope to soon!

CHENEY: 57 degrees, clear, low. Outlook: Wildlife and Parks reports: channel catfish fair on cut bait off main-lake points; wipers poor to fair (a few are being caught on slab spoons).

EL DORADO: 60 degrees, fairly clear, 3 feet low. Outlook: Maynard’s Bait Shop reports: all species poor.

Trout fishing has been fast and furious at ELdorado trout stream.

Snyder’s Marina reports a few crappie have been caught but it’s slow due to the cold and windy weather.

Vics Lake
Had day off and fished perfect day on Thursday. Tried power bait, super-duper and panther-martin lures. Not one bite! The regulars at this lake, there are many, tell equally poor fishing stories. Lake seems low and more polluted than last year. I suggest other lakes if you want a good trout-fishing day.

El Dorado trout stream. Fished for trout last night and used powerbait and caught a limit. Saw others catching trout on small spoons and spinners silver seemed best.

Marion:
Wednesday Nov 8. Water temp ranged from 48 to 53 degrees. Wind 0-5 knots, no gust. Fished the dam in morning with spoons and sassy shads. Trolled shad raps in afternoon. Shutout all day. Friend caught two small c-cats using shad.

Thursday Nov 9. Water temp same but winds gusted up to 15 knots. Caught a few white bass and a small striper. Better than day before but still disappointing results.

Marion Lake
Reports of wipers have been caught at Marion.

Those who post like that of 11/21/2006 without giving specifics serve no purpose and should be disregarded as useless rubbish.

Does anybody have a report for Kingman State Fishing Lake? Thinking about going there and doing some pike fishing. Anybody got any tips for me. Never piked fish before. Never even been to the lake before either. Any input would be apprecaited. Thanks.

Anonymous said...

Kingman has a spring that comes up under the surface. It attracts the pike in the heat of summer (cooler water)and in winter (warmer water). The spring is in the northeast corner of the lake. If you have a temperature gauge on your boat, you can tell in summer by the cooler surface temp and the clearer water. I would guess that in winter, the temperature gauge should show warmer water. At any rate, that's where the pike will likely be hanging out.

Jeremy said...

Thanks for the input. About how big and deep is the lake? Do you know. Good fishing to you!

Anonymous said...

Go to http://kdwp.state.ks.us/news/fishing/where_to_fish_in_kansas/fishing_locations_public_waters/region_4/kingman_state_fishing_lake for info on Kingman County Lake.

Anonymous said...

I didn't know about the spring and haven't really discovered it myself. The max depth I pretty much have found throughout the lake is about five feet. Some six feet around the rock piers. One spot did find nine feet at one time. Also remember the lake is two feet low. I caught my fish mostly on the far end of the lake where you have to go in at the first entrance. Caught two small pike in that area. Fun lake, but sometimes can be challenging.

Has anyone fished Chase SFL recently?

Butler County: Went fishing at a farm pond last saturday 12/30/06 and caught 6 largemouth. Biggest three were 5.5, 2.7, and 2.3. Caught all on a black and blue jig with trailer 8'deep.

Eldorado.
Went out after x-mas and tried out new chest waders. Very calm day. Caught a few whites with an occasional nice walleye. They are starting to move up off deeper points and creek channels, though the lake is so low I believe a good year of fishing is upon us. My early in the year spots are burdened by the shallow water but look for creek channels close to the bank if you don't have a boat. Throw a shad immitation or a shad rap. It has worked well for me. Watch out for the Zebra mussels PLEASE!

February 3 - Cheney Reservior - Fished most of the day Saturday on the upper end off Yoder Point with no luck; not even a tap. The ice was 6" thick. The water was about 6-7 feet deep in most areas. There were about 50 people in the upper end scattered about, with most hanging right around Yoder Point. Only saw a couple fish caught. I heard, after I got off the ice that the fish were suspended about 2-3 feet off the bottom (didn't even think of that since it was only 6 feet deep to start with). For those who knew, it still seemed a very, very slow day for fishing.

Good ice in the coves at Eldorado last weekend (Feb 3 and 4) at 7 to 8 inches thick.

February 7, 2007 - Answer to Ice fishing for walleye question -

I share your same concern. I've sent numerous emails to Kansas Wildlife and Parks and Nebraska Wildlife and Parks asking about good places to catch walleyes through the ice and they are just as curious as we are. The Nebraska folks said they just seem to go away in the winter. I personally believe the walleye are biting somewhere on something but haven't figured it out though. A friend of mine use to catch them on minnows at Cheney back when I was catching whites, wipers and stripers a 4 or 5 years ago on kastmasters and little cleos. I'm really concerned about the fisheries at Cheney because of the white perch. It's just weird on how we can have such great success and then nothing. It's not from a lack of trying. Since I live 20 minutes from the lake, I will venture out and I will cut 100 holes a day over a 2 mile stretch with nothing to show for it. I will fish 4 to 12 of water looking for them. Honestly, Cheney has left a bad taste in my mouth.

Last year I went to Glen Elder and caught crappie which was nice.

I just got back from Lake Oahe in South Dakota and had a good time catching walleyes through the ice. We caught our limit everyday (4 fish per person) of 18"-22" fish. I was catching them on rod and reels and tip ups. What seem to be hot was a little cleo tipped with a live minnow.

Unfortunately, our truck, 2 4-wheelers and all of our fishing gear was stolen in Council Bluffs Iowa on the way back so I haven't fished in Kansas yet. However, I just received my shipment from Cabelas. I will venture out this weekend. I typically don't use live bait but am considering it just because it does seem to pull walleyes through the ice. It's just something I personally haven't tried in Kansas.

Good luck fishing,

Postman

February 5, 2007 - Ice fishing for walleye question - This probably should be on the the commentary page, but I looked and it don't look like much is going on there. I would like to know if anyone can give out some info on how to catch walleye through the ice. I know some were caught a few years back at Cheney while fishing for stripers, probably more by accident as opposed to actually targeting them. The walleye is caught by ice fisherman consistently up north, so why can't that be done here, say like at El Dorado. If someone is doing it, how about sharing the info.

Wally

February 5, 2007 - Cheney question - Questions for ice fisherman. Is anyone seeing in the ice dead shad? Few of them? Lots of them? How big? Why I ask. Back in 2000, last time I went ice fishing. There were huge numbers of dead shad in the ice. I was told this was a good thing. Both for the shad and fish to feed on at the bottom of lake. Intern this is excellent food for the fish, (easy pickens). Like eating at Home Town Buffet, all you can eat. I remember that spring and into summer, (2000-2001). Was one of my very best years of fishing. Another comments would be apperceive.

"Ice fishing was terrible at Eldorado on Sunday. NOt even one hit".

Where abouts did you fish at El Dorado on Sunday? I was there Saturday and ended up keeping 5 nice crappie, all 11 inches+. My father went yesterday and caught some white bass along with some largemouth and crappie.

Anonymous said...

Fished at Marion Reservoir on Saturday, Feb. 10, above the dam in the outlet area. Ice was 12" with another 12" of slush under the ice. Don't know what the rest of the ice is around the lake. Caught some crappies and white bass on small tube jigs with light line. Only ended up with 4 crappie big enough to keep (one was 11+" - female). Fish were taking it very lightly. Only actually felt one fish tap the jig. Not many fisherman out there, from what I could see.

Anonymous said...

Ice is melting fast at Eldorado. Maybe it will open up this week.

CaptainT16 said...

Yes, I would imagine that Eldorados ice is pretty much gone. We went over on Saturday and started fishing around 8:00 catching crappie right off the bat. Sure didn't last long and the bite was off. Ended up leaving at around 3:00 and the 3 of us ended up catching around 12 crappie. It was a fun trip and fun while the ice was around. Great year for ice fishing in KS.

Anonymous said...

Trout area at Eldorado has melted and now has open water. I heard trout were stocked again late last week.

Anonymous said...

Trout are being caught left and right at Eldorado in the trout stream. I caught some on jigs and small spoons silver in color. Saw people catching trout also on salmon eggs and powerbait. Some guys limited in 30 minutes and left.

Anonymous said...

I caught 4 keeper trout in an hour at El Dorado plus a few smaller ones that I threw back today.

Tight lines,

Went out Saturday afternoon and fished many areas up in Old Bluestem lake off some points and in the creek channel with jigs and stickbaits never got a hit. Noticed a few anglers wading around lookout point for walleye. Fishing was very slow. Found a few small crappie around the marina.

Fished up north on Eldorado Lake Wednesday evening along the creek channel and caught 5 white bass and 7 walleye. Only 3 of the walleye were legal limit with the biggest being 22 inches. Only males were caught and they weren't even close to spawning yet due to the hardness of the sperm sacks. Though the building of a T-storm interupted my wading with claps of thunder and lightning strikes it wasn't long till it moved on and I was able to get back into the water. Chartreuse was the ticket that nite. If the temps stay up it won't be long now.

I went looking for northern pike at Kingman STF. It was windy and cold and I never got any northern pike to take my slab spoon. However, I caught a three pound bass jigging a bluegill swim bait under the dock. That was good enough for me. Honestly though, it was about one step above ice fishing.

Anonymous said...

Went to El Dorado sunday evening around Duerchen creek (sp) and caught 1 largemouth which was too small. 2 white crappie and 1 black crappie. 4 white bass, one which was 2 lbs. and had eggs. All were caught on mepps, crappie jigs and road runners. Wish we could get some rain and fill the lake back up.

March 5, 2007 - Farm Ponds - Took my dad and brother out fishing last wed. Whether was perfect, but I knew the water would be very chilly. Tried our farm pond we have fished for twenty years and couldn't get anything. I think the fish haven't recovered from the rainy chilly weahter we had. The pond was very muddy too. Even his small pond that has tons of small bass didn't produce a bite. We went to a bigger farm pond about 40 acres and tried it as well. It wasn't as murky, but couldn't find the fish. The carp were jumping all around though. Another fisherman was there and said it had nice sized fish in there, but he had nothing either and he scaled the whole lake with his chest waders. Going to try next week... might even take my boat out as well. Hopefully I will have a better report.

Fished ElDordo Saturday and Sunday all day long. Fished in jon boat on Satchel creek Saturday. Crappie was very slow. Caught 4 all day. The only great thing about the day was that the largest crappie went 15 inches. Very Nice! Went up on the Walnut Sunday and the fishing was about the same (slow). Did catch a pig (16 inch crappie). Nice to see the crappie getting larger at ElDorado again.

me and a buddy decided to go and fish the trout stream in el dorado on saturday and caught our limit in about 2 hours the big one was 16 inch and the smallest was 12 inch

Wichita Northwest Water Reclamation Ponds- went here, had fun catching tons of bluegils, small 0-1/2 pound.. thats about it for now, however several ponds to explore so hope to get more into it soon, and get the bass and catfish. no restroom facilities out there. windy and merky waters..

Derby Stone Creek- No Luck Yet, tried worm, plastics, livers, shrimp, several fishing tho. Merky Waters.

Haysville- riggs Park- Worms No Luck Yet. Windy day

Wichita South Lake- Nice Pond, A few crappiecaught on Jigs, released, no big enough to keep. no other luck yet, using worms, Shrimp, stink baits, and artificial baits,

Emery Park- I went there two days ago and caught 8 vey nice (2-5 lb) catfish. Went there again yesterday, caught three (1-3 lb). Other person fishing nearby caught his limit of very nice 2-5 lb catfish (he was using stinkbait).

Tons of weeds so bottomfishing is a royal pain in the butt- I was using a worm on a bobber with a circle hook about 4' deep, right off the end of the point. Many of the larger females were jampacked full of roe and looked like they were pretty close to spawning.

Clearwater- Murky, full of weeds. Caught 2 dinky catfish (1 lb at best) in 5 hours.

Fished El Dorado Sunday afternoon from 1-6pm with no luck fishing the northern railroad causeway. Quite a few boats up there, but not a whole lot going on at all. Only saw 4-5 crappie caught in the trees just north of the railroad bridge up there. Glad to see the lake getting some water, now just need to keep the warm temperatures and that snow away.

Sedgwick County Park on 4/16- Vic's Lake & Big Slough Creek. I was there for 12 hours and didn't have so much as a nibble. Didn't see anyone else catching anything, either. This makes my 10th time going there and I have YET to catch anything at all. I doubt I'll return there as it's not worth the hassle- just a load of annoying people and no fish...

KDOT East lake- 4/18- was there for five hours trying to catch trout- or ANYTHING keeper sized. The only thing biting (aside from the mosquitoes and black flies) were swarms of 3-4" bluegill/sunfish. Saw a guy nearby catch a very small (not keeper size) channel cat, but that was it. Lake is full of trash and debris, and it is extremely difficult to walk down the steep slope to access the water.

Anonymous said...

Clearwater Chisholm Ridge Lake- something is DREADFULLY wrong here.

Previously, the catfish were biting very well on a wide variety of baits and it was rare that I didn't catch my limit, but the fish started mysteriously dying after the recent rains.

I've been there the past several days/nights, and havn't had so much as a nibble. No one else has been successful recently, either.

I counted nearly 70 large dead catfish scattered along the banks. I fear that most, if not all, of the catfish have been killed off.

Hopefully the Kansas Department of Wildlife can find and solve the problem.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like fertilizer probably ran into your lake.I've seen it before in Derby. With all the rain, thats most likely what killed youre cats. That happens often in residential lakes.

Anonymous said...

I agree- it's gotta be fertilizer, pesticide, or salt runoff. There are agricultural fields right next to the lake, and I know the county salts the h*ll out of that road during the winter (the water entering the lake comes from a ditch along the highway).

But, so far ONLY the catfish seem to have been affected. I caught a very nice bass out there, and tons of bait...er...sunfish (including orange-spotted sunfish- dinky but gorgeous).

It's just such a shame to see all those large fish rotting along the shoreline. They didn't get that size overnight, and it'll be at least a year (if not longer) before the ones being stocked now are big enough to bother wish. Crud...guess I gotta find another fishin' hole. :(

Anonymous said...

Council Grove City Lake. It took some time for us to find Crappie on 4/19 but after we did we caught about 30 and then had to leave. On 4/20 we were back and caught approximately 70 good ones between two of us, on tube jigs. 3 of them were over 15 inches.

Anonymous said...

Cheney,

Fished this morning and the white perch were not even biting on my sons pole. Does anyone ever fish the spill way as it is a raging river now.

Anonymous said...

Lake Afton- been there twice & fished all night. Catfish are s-l-o-w...only two weak nibbles the first night, and one small (1/2 lb max) channel caught the second night. White bass, however, were biting like crazy; they were credit-card sized, but perfect for bait later in the season! I caught nearly 80 of 'em while waiting for the catfish to bite.

Anonymous said...

Cheney,

Heard of some good luck off the dam using chicken liver on a medium retrieve so I tried it but it was to windy and I just let is sink and caught a 19.5" and a 15". I'll keep trying til i get a keeper

Anonymous said...

What were you using out at afton for the white bass?

Anonymous said...

I was using teeny minnows I caught in the shallows with a dipnet on a tiny trout fly-sized hook. The white bass flat ate 'em up!! I would have stayed lots longer and caught more, but I got too cold... :(

BTW- caught my limit on catfish at Afton, using 2" green sunfish as bait. :)

Anonymous said...

Caught a 17lb Channel cat and a 6 lb flat head. You can checkout the picstures at the Lake Afton bait shop

Anonymous said...

Nice! I caught a channel cat just shy of 36" out at Afton, fought it for a solid 45 minutes! I dunno what the weight was, though- I stopped by the bait shop but they were closed. Caught a couple more in the 8-12 lb range as well...this was at the island cove up north of the boat ramp on 3" bluegills, BTW.

What's the best place to catch flatheads out there? I've been itching to catch one, but can't seem to locate them.

was planning on fishing eldorado lake this weekend, and was wondering if anyone could tell me how the crappie fishing is????? or isn't????? and if anything else is biting. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CaptainT16 said...

I was over there on Sunday afternoon in between storms in the upper northeast portion of the lake in the river channel, just north of I-35. We were there for 4-5 hours and only caught 4 crappie, the largest being around 11 inches. Also caught one small catfish around a pound or so. All caught on minnows under a bobber. I would say with all the rain, El Dorado has risen almost 3 ft since Sunday, I would say it will put a damper on fishing for a bit? Never hurts to head out and try, but sure was slow on Sunday. Good luck if you head out.

Anonymous said...

okay has anyone fished eldorado lately? is it true that the crappie are finally beginning to run? was just curious, with all the crazy weather we have been having i have just about given up on them.If anyone has fished eldorado in the past few days i would appreciate your comments. Good luck with the fishing.

CaptainT16 said...

See my previous post. Yes, we fished El Dorado on Sunday afternoon, luckily the storms passed either west or east of us. We were there around 4-5 hours and only caught 4 crappie...biggest was probably 10-11 inches. One small catfish, one 4-5lb drum. Prett slow for the most part and I imagine that with the lake rising over 3 feet the past couple of days, that will probably have an effect on them, and I imagine it wouldn't be for the best.

Fished El Dorado lake last evening with my girlfriends oldest daughter (11) for walleyes. She caught 2 keepers on a jig and worm. The largest one was 25 1/2" and weighed 4 lbs 12 oz. Fished off of the old highway 77 road bed in 10' to 15' of water.

Clearwater Chisholm Ridge: Fishing was absolutely lousy, to put it nicely. The only thing biting were the blackflies and mosquitoes, which were absolutely awful. Catish were supposedly stocked on 5/25; I tried over the entire holiday weekend at various times using a wide assortment of baits and techniques, but only got one halfhearted nibble. Went home empty-handed, very disappointing. Don't think I'll be going back out there anytime soon.

Anonymous said...

Cheney is a mess for camping and fishing. The grounds seem like a city dump and the lake has been called the "Dead Sea" by regular anglers. Suggest other locations when considering a fishing and/or camping trip.

Anonymous said...

Two friends and I decided to hit up Clearwater- we only caught 1 puny channel cat between the three of us over several hours.

It's a small pond and is getting a ton of heavy fishing pressure. Plus, someone said that people are taking way more than the creel limit of 5 and cleaning the place out within hours of it being stocked; KDWP might wanna start creel limit enforcement out there.

Anonymous said...

If someone sees the fishing limits being broken at any lake then they need to report it! These poachers will continue to steal from all of us unless we as fishermen keep an eye on our resource and help protect it. Game warden numbers are listed by county in the KDWP fishing rules book or call the sheriff. I always have a cell phone and I don't hesitate to call to report this criminal activity.

Anonymous said...

Lake Afton- fishing was lousy on the west side near the boat ramp, but we saw a real big catfish near the shore (I thought it was a log resting against the bank). Don't know how big it really was, but from the tip of its head to its dorsal fin it was easily 18"...

On the east side fishing was somewhat better, mostly huge carp but some small catfish (2 lb max, most too dinky to keep).

THERE ARE TONS OF SNAKES- WATCH OUT!! My son in law got bitten by a copperhead over on the north side (thankfully not very serious). Be careful, the lake has a huuuge number of snakes!

Anonymous said...

For you folks trying to fish without much luck (I"m assuming you're going after catfish?)- try going first thing in the morning! I went to Clearwater as soon as it was light enough to see, about 5 am- the catfish were biting like mad and I very easily caught my limit. I'd suggest hitting your favorite fishing lake from 5am to about 8am, using chicken liver preserved with garlic salt; you shouldn't have any trouble catching your limit. But be sure to bring bug spray, as the 'skeeters are really awful that time of day...

Good luck! :-)

Anonymous said...

Bit by a copperhead huh? Are you sure it was a copperhead? They are usually a little further east, like in the flint hills, than lake afton.

Anonymous said...

Mosquitoes at Cheney are relentless! Covered myself in bug spray with something like a DEET 90 and the bugs laughed at me as they drank my blood!

Anonymous said...

Caught a 20" bass at emery park,..don't usually catch any bass over 8-10" it was a beauty

Anonymous said...

Yup, it was definately a copperhead- we killed it and brought it with us to the ER. Be careful out there, especially walking around overgrown grassy areas. Most of the snakes out there are harmless nonvenomous species (ie garter snakes, water snakes etc) but there's always a chance of stumbling across something poisonous...

Anonymous said...

any fish coming out of butler?

Anonymous said...

I know this is a fishing post, but I have seen copperheads at the big ditch here in Wichita as well as out at Kingman and Butler lakes

Anonymous said...

Caught a 14.5" and a 19" Largemouth yesterday at Kingman SFL. Running a white double willow blade spinner just above the weeds off a pier on the west side. Released them both

Anonymous said...

Fished Cheney today (Friday). Only caught one 22 inch wiper off Wichita Point on a wildeye swimmim shad. The water is high and murky.

Anonymous said...

Fished Cheney again on Saturday. This time I didn't troll, but fished humps with cut white perch. Whoever, said dead white perch won't catch wipers must not have tried too hard.

We got broke off once and landed a 20' and 24". The water has cleared a bit and fishing should improve this week.

Anonymous said...

I pulled eight bass from Butler 6-17. The water is high and vegetation in the back area hasn't grown much in the usual spots. Bass were holding tight to cover. I caught mine in the creek holding against the deep drop offs of the shoreline and then a few in the reeds. Caught them all on a chatterbait frog.

Anonymous said...

Fished Marion county lake Saturday. Caught 3 carp. One 7lb 11oz, the other 2 3+lbs. One crappie 14 in., and a 3lb 13oz Striper. very nize.

Anonymous said...

I didn't see anyone fishing on Wichita Point on Saturday. Hope they catch 'em if they're cheatin!

Did see some good ole white boys, some good lookin' girls in a ski boat, the griswalds, and partridge in a pear tree.

caught 3 bass out at kingman sfl on saturday evening... 2 on a scum frog and 1 on a rubber worm (after he missed the scum frog).

all fish were tight to cover and very close to shore.

Anonymous said...

eldoradoes is overflowing with water. I fished it saturday without a bite.
Also, all through the day, we heard something splashing behind the submerged trees. We later saw what it was. There was some kind of fish flopping in realy shallow waters around only the freshly flooded weeds. Does anyone know what these fish are?

Anonymous said...

More than likely you were hearing carp. The carp always head to the newly flooded shallows as the water rises.

Anonymous said...

Yup, carp are spawning now. That's what you're hearing making all the racket.

Anonymous said...

sounds like its time to go bowfishing

anybody doin any good out of marion resevoir?

Anonymous said...

Is there a map somewhere that will show where all the different points are on Cheney? Wichita Point, Yoder Fishing Jetty, the fish feeders, ect....

Anonymous said...

6 Largemouth, one white bass in 4 hours at Kingman on July 5th. As soon as the sun cam out from the clouds, all fish stopped. Everything was very tight to timber, usually needing to drag a worm or spinnerbait across to get hit.

Anonymous said...

The fish feeders are all empty at Lake Afton; when the feeders were dispensing feed, fishing was extremely good. However, I was there for many hours using a normally productive bait (for catfish) and didn't get so much as a teensy nibble. I was there during one of the "prime times" for fishing (light enough to see to early morning) and still nothing.

Clearwater- same result as Lake Afton: absolutely NOTHING biting. Tons of weeds & moss clogging the pond, and it's extremely muddy due to recent rains.

Anonymous said...

Fished Cheney Friday and Saturday. Fished the sun-up and sun-down periods abd stayed away from the mid-day heat. Drifted shad sides and tried dip bait for cats around Yoder point and jetty. Caught two very small ones for two days effort. Water temp ranged from 80-86 degrees and clarity was the usual for Cheney....mud.

Kyle said...

Sedgwich county park
Caught two very small bass on topwater tiny torpedo and watched minos getting hit everywhere. Most where gettin snagged right around the weeds.

Anonymous said...

White perch have been caught also in Vic's Lake and Tom Scott lake at Sedgwick County Lake. White perch are pretty much everywhere around Wichita.

Anonymous said...

Good going KDWP for introducing white perch to Kansas and Oklahoma. Kudos to the Cheney Lake Biologist for gettting them stocked in Kansas!

Anonymous said...

Hi. I've been fishing at Kingman Lake for three years and I've never caught a Walleye, nor have I seen one, yet KWDP reports Walleye as a fish species at the lake. Seems altogether too shallow for Walleye.

Also reading interesting posts about people having the best luck with pike in the northeast corner of the lake. Never tried up there, as I always do well around the two islands in the southwest corner of the lake among the weeds.

Also, I see a poster saying he caught a White Bass out there. Again, another species I've never seen caught.

So anyone caught a Walleye at Kingman?

Anonymous said...

There's no walleye or white bass at Kingman but there are white perch that are mistaken for white bass.

Anonymous said...

Don't know about the white bass, but I've caught a few walleye at Kingman, mostly by accident while fishing for other species, esp. bass. Last one I caught was about 3 1/2-4 lbs. & I got him down at the south end on a minnow & bobber.

Anonymous said...

Catch the snakes, chop them up for bait for catfish. Great bait this time of year.

Anonymous said...

Isn't the daily limit on water snakes 8?

Anonymous said...

I am thinking about going to kingman state fishing lake to fish for bass and pike,..anybody have any luck out there and on what if you do,....appreciate any information

Pike pointer: Fish with 3/0 hook on a carolina rig with a huge glob 3-4 big nightcrawlers. Check bait every 15 minutes. Pike like big globs of worms when its hot. In mid September go back to jumbo size shiners under a cork for live bait for pike. Any other good "pike pointers"?

Anonymous said...

Another pike pointer- you might try a small water snake rigged carolina style with the 3/0 hook. It's all natural bait that the pike already feed on out at Kingman.

Anonymous said...

For Kingman fish can thrive in there due to the mass amounts of vegetation. The whole south end is full of it completely, but has some spots that drop down nine feet. I bet that water stays ten degrees cooler or more. It's very clear back there, but very hard to fish now with almost no open pockets. Bass are easy there... well not easy, but they are under the lily pads and takes patience and persistence. The two pike I caught there I caught one on a storm 2 inch minnow and then another on a senko style bait.

Anonymous said...

Concerning "pike pointers"...

There only real pike pointer you need is to make sure you have something in the water. They'll go after anything that moves. Pike fishing is fun cuz they fight, they jump, they zig zag, and they're as easy as pie to catch. ;)

Just wish we had more Kansas lakes with them.

Anonymous said...

Can anyone tell me if the Wednesday jackpot is still going at Eldorado lake and when the next one will be?

Anonymous said...

Kansas has great fishing. You have to realize that there is only a few people posting on here. I have caught good sized bass even at the ponds/lakes inside of wichita.
I can pull out good numbers of bass from kingman or butler. There are a few lakes that are known for producing large stripers. Toronto, Fall river, marion... can produce excellent crappie.
Maybe it's not that the fishing sucks, but the people suck at fishing. Many days you just can't find a happy little spot and cast something out in the water and expect a fish to come right to it and eat it. If it's pouring outside and all muddy you wouldn't go out and have a picnic would you?
You want to catch fish simply do some learning on how to catch fish. I don't believe there is a lake that is not worth going to or doesn't have quality fish.
Some lakes do have a lot of trash and its unfortunate... The ones that are far away from the city are more clean... guess since it takes so long to get there people are more respectable. You want to see a sloppy place go to Watson park... very pathetic and they have a staff working there.

Now that the summer is over it is time to start fishing up again. We went to El Dorado Lake and csught a little of every thing and even had a couple big enought for supper. The lake is not a busy now that the summer and the holidays are over, you can enjoy and fish with out getting run over by a boat of jet ski.w

Anonymous said...

Fished Cheney on Friday. Quickly found fish feeding on the surface. We eased the boat up and started casting into the school. We hooked up a double with one magnum white bass and a wiper just under the 21 inch limit. The school disappeared and we switched to trolling. That was unproducttve. Did catch a few drum fishing cut bait over some humps, but the wind came up and we headed for the ramp. This time of year is great as there were only 6 boats on the lake!..

White Perch have recently been documented at Lake Afton and at the Sedgwick County Park Lakes in Wichita. For more information about white perch, see our website at http://www.kdwp.state.ks.us/news/fishing/aquatic_nuisance_species/aquatic_nuisance_species_list/white_perch

White perch resemble white bass, but are usually under 10 inches long in size.

Anyone try any trout fishing at Sedgwick county park yet?

Eldorado is at about 62 degrees the fishing is still slow. Caught a couple wipers trolling crankbaits north of the timber by chelsea. No trout report yet.

How come everytime I get into the fish at Eldorado a dead body is found. Just Thursday I was out jigging the timber with two other fellows in front of the boat ramp...Scarey! Found some real nice white bass and a few smallies on the northwest side of the lake. Water temp was in the upper 50's. White and charteruse jigs worked relly well. Fishing some drop offs and rocky points wher the creek channel came close to shore.

What is the El Dorado water levels at?
Report said it's one inch above conservation pool??

Clay said...

Eldorado is at or around pool. I plan on going out with my chest waders and seeing if I can get into some pre-spawn walleye action if the wind cooperates. It is getting to be that time of year. Last year bout this time started catching them real early but the weather was a heck of alot differant last year. Will let you know what happens.

Anonymous said...

Ya I usually start fishing El Dorado for the eyes around the beginning of March.I reallt don't do any good till water temp is around 50deg. Good luck.

Anonymous said...

where at on eldorado do you catch the walleye, during spawing and is itaround march when they start spawing????

Anonymous said...

When do walleye start spawning at cheney. I've heard fishing off the damn is a really good spot..

Anonymous said...

You can catch walleye around just about any rocky points. Night time is the best time to catch em. That water has to warm up a little bit more though.

Anonymous said...

If you are bank fishing there are some good spots off of the dam but also just north of the dam off the shores off the primitive camping as well as sailboat cove. These areas will produce whites and walleye. But I agree with the rest of them it is a little early yet this year I usually dont do good on walleye till mid 50's water. That is just me.

Anonymous said...

Anyone else notice how Saugeye seem to "spawn" sooner than walleye? The past few years I've done pretty well on saugeye in Feb and early March, but the walleye are a few weeks behind them.

Anonymous said...

I didn't think Saugeye did any spawning. Correct me if i'm wrong but I though Saugeye were sterile due to the fact they were cross bred...Did you mean Sauger??

lefty67 said...

They are cross-bred, but they can also reproduce on their own. Maybe you're thinking about Wipers?

Anonymous said...

Where are you catching sageye? They arent in El Dorado are they?
Live bait or lures?

Wade said...

I caught a couple at marion county lake once but dont know much about them we were using jerk baits at night.

Jackson said...

Any idea on the size range of the saugeye lbs/length.

Wade said...

not really? I assume they could size out like a walleye the couple I caught went about 18".

Anonymous said...

Ok, I just did the research and found that Saugeye DO reproduce but only the Walleye genetics will apear in the eggs. A Saugeye cannot reproduce another Saugeye. Thats actually kinda cool I think.

BULLHEAD said...

Is anybody else about to go crazy, ready to do some walleye fishing!?

Anonymous said...

I can't give away all my secrets about saugeye, but I can tell you that I've caught a few already this year using the same technique as you would for walleye fishing. They're not as big as a walleye but a few over 20 inches.

Clay said...

Eldorado
Well the fishing was pretty slow Tuesday when I went out. I had one short bite on my jig but water temp still a little chilly. I did catch a few nice sized whites off the point. Opened the gate in the spillway that evening. I never really had much luck when the lake is releasing water. Still a bit early but chest waders don't leak. Going to head over to the SB&T Show to stock up on rubber.

Anonymous said...

Hope these warm days stick around long enough to get some activity going.

BULLHEAD said...

If I can get all my "Honey Do's" done im gonna try and hit el dorado for some walleyes this weekend...anybody know who if anybody has bait leeches in stock?

wade said...

usually by now the bait store at 12th and main in eldorado has them. have not been in there yet though.

Clay said...

The Bait store at 12th and main will not have leeches in till the middle of March or early April. Thats what they told me on Tuesday. Maynards bait store east of Eldorado on 54 has them though. Still releasing water out of the lake. Have not seen anyone catch anything in the outlet. Have been catching white bass off some points where the sun has been shining on. Walleye still real slow. Going to give the lake a rest this weekend and hit some watersheds out East with the kids.

BULLHEAD said...

I should have followed Clay's lead.
I fished el dorado last night and I caught a big GOOSE EGG.
Maybe next weekend???

Anonymous said...

Anyone have the current water temp for el dorado, or marion??

Anonymous said...

How bout the water temp for cheney?

Anonymous said...

All current water temps are listed on the kdwp website under where to fish. Lakes are listed by region.

CaptainT16 said...

You can also check out www.kcstar.com on Thursdays on their outdoor page, they give the fishing reports and water temps every Thursday. That's the Kansas City Star website if anyone was wondering. Doesn't list all of KS lakes, but does have a prett good list.

Fishing Information Night in Wichita on March 13, 2008.

Want to know where the really big fish are? Do you have that burning question about your favorite lake? Maybe even a question about a fishing regulation that doesn’t make sense. Well the place for you to be is the “Fishing Information Night” at the Great Plains Nature Center Auditorium, 6232 E. 29th Street North, Wichita, KS, Thursday March 13, 2008 from 6:30-8:30 pm. Local KDWP Fisheries Biologists: Jon Stein (Cheney-Marion District), Jessica Mounts (Harvey-Sedgwick-Sumner Cos.) and Craig Johnson (El Dorado-Council Grove District) will be presenting an overview of area Reservoir fisheries and smaller lakes of local interest. To address questions regarding fisheries farther from home, Tom Swan, Regional Fisheries Supervisor, and fisheries biologists Leonard Jirak and Carson Cox will also be in attendance. With the recent discovery of zebra mussels at Cheney Reservoir we will discuss Aquatic Nuisance Species as well.

Hope to see you there with all those fish questions.

For more information please contact the Wichita Regional Office at 316-683-8069.

Anonymous said...

I see the water temps on KDWP website, but i beleive they are only current with the date posted on the fishing report. I did not know if anyone knew of a website which kept day by day recording of the water temps.

I know this time of year is busy for KDWP with setting nets out and they do not always have the time to keep the pages updated with current conditions.

Anonymous said...

The army corps of engineers website has lake temps and lake levels as well as if the lake is releasing

masterlocdown said...

yeah, what he said. They'll list how much water is being released and water levels. Some will show temperature. I usually check here.

Clay said...

Caught 3 walleye and 9 white bass Sunday evening out at Eldorado. 1 was under 18 but the other two were very nice 24" and a 26". Threw a rattletrap and some jigs. Water temps still could be warmer and I am guessing after the week we are planning on having the temps will increase. Chest waders are good to have this time of year. I can't give all my secrets away but start hitting the points and creek drop offs in the upper end of the lake. Walleye are starting to stage in the pre-spawn mode, bites are very light and good equiptment is a must.

Anonymous said...

i have noticed that ElDorado has not updated their fising report since 2/21/08.But everyone else around stays on top of the game. Is it because there isn't anything to report??? Was just wondering if there was any activity going on??? Planning on giving ElDorado a try in the very near future.Has anyone been out lately???? Any luck???

CaptainT16 said...

Actually they updated El Dorados report today, but not much to report. I've talked to a couple of guys that have fished the dam over there, but haven't had any luck. If we could just get some warm temps and not fall back into the 30's at night, we would be set for some eye action on the dams.

Wade said...

Went out tho Cheney thursday 3-20 water temp is at 43-45 depending on where you are fishing. Very Windy, walleye were slow caught one keeper went 22.5 inches weighed 3.5lbs. other thatn him nothing to talk about. lots of bank fishing going on. had most of our activity fishing rocky drop offs.

Anonymous said...

Went to Marion Resevoir on French Creek Cove yesterday. Caught a 2 lb channel and 2 lb White Bass. No water was being released at the dam. Does anyone know a good place to catch crappie there? When will they start running?

Anonymous said...

Eldorado restocked,(a double stocking) of trout on March 14th. I did very well maxed out every day Mar14-20 and even caught a 17" 3lb trout on the 14th. On the 21st they started letting alot of water out and the fishing went downhill. Anybody know why they were letting so much water out when they were only 1 foot above consevation pool? seems like a big waste washing all thos newly stocked trout downstream.

Iceman said...

went out to cheney last friday caught my limt one was a 25 inch female and the other one was a male 23 inch my buddys got one each hope to do so again tonight

Anonymous said...

3/28/08 The reason for the let out of water is to keep the lake at pool or below pool for the up comming spring rains. The catfish and the walleye in the river love the taste of trout. This help the people at the marina get the work done on before the spring rains come and raise the lake a lot higher. The good fishing is starting to be good on the lake.

Anonymous said...

if fishing is beginning to be good, then whats biting??? i definitely didn't have any luck.

Anonymous said...

cheney lake people please update fiching conditions more than once a month

Fished Eldorado twice last week once on wednesday and once friday. We got skunked but did talk to one person who said he had caught three walleye on thursday night. The water temp is at 45 and every fish i marked was below 20'. Cheney water temp is up almost to 50 and the spawn has hit lots of walleye this year. Early last week and late two weeks ago the fishing was excellent.

CLAY said...

Fished Eldorado Lake Monday and Wednesday evening. Caught one walleye monday night that was a 24 inch male and a handfull of whitebass. Wednesday caught 5 crappie and a nice smallmouth trying to jig for walleye. The lake still needs to get a little warmer. I am going to try to fish after dark this weekend and see if the are biting late at night. Who knows what they are doing, its a guessing game at this point. The fishing should greatly improve since the they are not letting as much water out below the dam.

Clay said...

Couldn't keep myself away from the lake last night. Wind pounding the shore and the walleye were biting. Took home 3 nice males from 18-24 inches. Still haven't caught a female yet. I would say that the walleye are in the spawning phase at Eldorado. All the fish I caught even the undersized ones were just milking away when pulled out of the water. It was tough fishing but it worked out in the end.

Anonymous said...

Clay, you been gettin your eyes on the dam? Been over on the point short of boulder bluff, no results.
