I am interested in knowing how you guys are feeling about the bait law that has been implimented this year? I know us that love to fish for big cats in Region 5 are ticked off at this stupid rule. If you want to get the scoop on it read Region 5 Dock Squawk. We need to raise our voices on this.

Both the new baitfish law and the livewell law are asinine! First and foremost, do not insult the KS angler by insinuating the lack of ability to discern a white perch from a blue gill. Not sure how many of our "law makers" have even attempted to pick up a pole, let alone find success with one. Using bait caught elsewhere has been in practice for decades, ANS has been a problem for far less time than that....which would tell me that using a bluegill caught from farme Joe's pond is not the problem. The anglers that would be transporting bait will be advanced enough to know the difference between species. Which is a lot more than we can say about our local agency who ordered up some "Striped Bass" for Cheney and got...well......wait, it wouldn't be fair to point that out now would it? Care to explain how the very experts driving these new laws are the ones that put white perch in Cheney to start with? The livewell/bilge/fish law....at last check I didn't find any fish cleaning stations at Marion Res., don't recall any at Cheney, and I think there USED to be one at El Dorado, but not sure about it any more. Not quite sure how the Tourism part of KDWP is going to fare when all of the visitors to our parks find stinking fish carcasses washed up on the bank at the public access points on the lakes. I'm sure that will paint a really brilliant picture for people. But then they will probably just tell us anglers all fishing is now catch and release because we made a mess. My solution is to simply take a cooler and fill it with lake water and put my fish it in...nowhere does it state in the regulation that coolers cannot be used. I'm sure that will be added now. I don't understand how all of this is falling to fishermen and nothing is being done with the pleasure boaters...same concept. It really irkes me that KDWP thinks that we anglers don't care enough to do our part to protect the very resource we dearly love to enjoy....

PS: Send the petition my way Region 5 guys, i will sign it and can assure you I have several others more than willing to do so as well.

Lance, great points. On the petition, I'm still checking into what has to be done to make it valid. I'm sure glad there is starting to be a lot of chatter on the blogs concerning these issues. Funny thing is, you'd think that some one from KDWPT would chime in. Maybe the commissioners??? I'm just a Kansas sportsman, and I check it several times throughout the day. If I was a staff memember or KDWPT, I'd be checking it just to stay up with things. As for the cooler, I'm ahead of you, got my ready, and got my tank in my truck, as far as I'm concerned, these aren't "livewells". Keep up the chatter guys.

Great points Lance. I hope we can get a petition going. Anyone telling fishermen to quit crying (used instead of the other word) about the new bait laws or using a task force to "enforce" or whatever else obviously does not bait fish or understand that government is not the answer EVER! Education is the answer and if the KDWPT wants to regulate then use common sense solutions. It is already illegal to transport ANS. So instead of making all wild bait illegal then maybe give a list of "legal" wild bait such as bluegill or redear perch etc. If you can't tell the difference between the white perch and a bluegill perch then maybe you shouldn't be using them for bait at all. Taking more of our freedoms away is not the answer. We all are concerned about the ANS but these big bodies of water that have them still have to release water out of their spillways and the ANS will still spread. If I want to catch a bluegill out of my farm pond and use it for catfish bait then I should be able to.

Zebra mussels are in Kanapolis Reservoir, Melvern Reservoir, Council Grove Reservoir, Council Grove City Lake, Jeffrey Energy Make-Up, and Auxillary Lakes, John Redmond Reservoir, Milford Reservoir, Wilson Reservoir, Marion Reservoir, Perry Reservoir, Cheney Reservoir, El Dorado Reservoir, Winfield City Lake, Lake Afton, and the rivers that flow from these impoundments.

Let me get this right so if I'm fishing the spillway at any of the above, and decide to go fish above the dam. I have to kill my bait, drive to the bait store and buy new bait. Drive back to where I started, park in my old spot. And walk over the dam. Then if I come back to the spillway, I have to start all over again........How stupid is that!

Sounds like fun huh?

Oh yeah, guys, I wanna get in on this fun also. Oh yeah, and if you want to take home some fish for the table, your water maybe designated as one where your catch has to be transported dead away from that body of water. So pack your hammer, smack them in the head(possible in front of "non-sportsman) and kill them suckers. Heck, maybe it'll be 110 degrees that day. That makes for a yummy, fresh catch. Thanks KDWPT!!!!!

I wonder if KDWPT will fine the numerous cormarants that catch fish and transport them? Would it be double if they transported an invasive species too?

CATMAN said...

Boy, if they fine "Mother Nature", they'll have enough revenue they'd have to start putting it into the State's General Fund, and Kansas wouldn't need a budget. Heck, they might even be able to by a neighboring state. Maybe mother nature can pick up my fine if I get one.

I agree catman with all that you are saying. I think it would not only be a great idea for the KDWPT to poll the sportsman on their opinions on changes in the law but it would be a WISE idea. Maybe they would find that there are many common sense solutions to these issues and the thoughts of many minds can be better than the thoughts of the few. You KDWPT guys should get on here and explain yourselves. What do we have to do go to the media to get you to answer?

I find it pretty interesting that KDWP is not chiming in on this. I Think they are sitting at there desks with their tails between their legs. Usually when someone is upset about something they chime right in and explain why it is. This time is different, so far:)

I'll say it!! Our biggest problems with bait are those once a year, inexperienced, or non English speaking fisherman. These new laws probably won't change anything when it comes right down to it because of this.

I hate to say this but education is the answer, however the only way to implement it would be through a license program similar to Hunter Safety. NO certification, no license, no fishing. Even the exempt landowner should have to take this course.

ANS is here to stay and if man were to do his part, then all we would have to worry about is Mother Nature. Which by the way, "life finds the way to go on".

Anyone on facebook, I've started a page, just search for Kansas Fishermen Against New Regulations. Just trying to spread the word.

I agree with all of u, especially the comment, about ' pleasure boaters'... Every person I know that is a fisherman is extremely diligent about taking measures to prevent the spread of ans species... That being said how many weekend warrior pleasure boaters are actually aware off the problem? I know of very few that don't fish.. Don't punish your paying customers that know what's going on

I can't find the Kansas Fishermen Against New Regulations facebook page.

So, back to those walleye at cheney, anyone?

Anonymous said...

Can you throw a cast net at KDOT east and west lakes? That is if I'm using the bait I catch in the same lake I caught it from.

Hearing at the Oct. commission meeting they are going to vote on possible "clean up" regulations on the bait law changes. Call or email the state, your commissioner, and local KDWPT staff and let them know your thoughts.
