THE KDWP&T ARE GOING TO RETHINK THEIR DUMB LAWS ABOUT DRAINING THE LIVE WELLS,HOW CAN YOU KEEP YOUR FISH ALIVE FOR AN HOURS TRIP HOME WHEN THE TEMPS GET CLOSE TO 100,AND ALSO THEY WOULD HAVE A TOUGH TIME ENFORCING THE NEW LAW. JIM MCKEE
I agree. We like to keep our catch fresh for better taste, and we take a lot of photos. I just hope they are reviewing what they've done, and make changes. It's not like they could make the changes now. With all the media outlets, the word would spread. After all, they can close hunting seasons, and snagging seasons at their discretion. I just think we need to get vocal, and express our views on this blog. Maybe someone at the state level will take note and change things.
Calling out Ben Neely! In your newsletter online you state in the Montgomery State lake article that it's legal to have no more than %3.2 malt beverage? You sure 'bout that?!
Greetings all -- Sinker, you are correct. Boy is my face red. There are no alcoholic beverages allowed at Montgomery State Fishing Lake. I regret my error.
I've got a bait shop here in Columbus, the one in West Mineral, one in Chetopa, and I think Angelo's in Hallowell still sells bait. I'm gonna talk to the one in Columbus to see if he's going to sell perch this year. I know he had a little trouble keeping them alive last year. I don't know about the others. I've never bought perch so I don't know what a good price is for them. I was gonna chance it but was told some crappie fisherman got checked the other day. Since they was fishing with minnows, they had to produce their reciept or something bait shops have to issue with the sale of live bait. It just really gripes me about the changes they rushed into. I figured by now, a biologist would have spoken up and tried to offer a reasoning. I know there's a lot of water in this state. I mainly fish the Neosho and Spring Rivers. These two watersheds feed The Grand Lake in Oklahoma. I checked the Oklahoma Regs, and it states the zebra mussles, and asian carp ARE present in Grand Lake. Hello, they are in the rivers than due to any high water we've had the last few years. Kansas says they're nearly impossible to remove/reduce. Why change bait usage on all water ways. The waterways that are confirmed to be free of ANS, change them, restrict them. As I've stated before, river fisherman know the difference between bait species(in some cases, I'd venture to say better than some people at the state level). Asian Carp, White Perch are mainly found in our rivers, and resivours(rivers that are dammed). Not to many people who fish rivers catch their bait from the rivers because much of Kansas' rivers are to turbid to sustain a catchable population of bait fish. I don't know any fisherman that catches bait, fishes a river, creek or anywhere else that setlines are legal, or where they can chase flatheads with pole and line, and then release their bait back in the lake, pond, or wherever they caught it. Most of us don't(didn't) catch anymore than we knew we could use. Just hard for me to stomach that something my family loves to do, we can't do anymore. That being catch bait, then go river fishing. I guess if the state wants to cut our taxes or due away with all our other fees, buying perch won't seem so bad. Thank you KDWPT commissioners, you are all the greatest!!!!!

Anyone know of any local baitshops that have carried, or will carry (this year)black perch in the six to ten inch size. When setlining for flatheads I like using big baits, I really like using filleting size bluegills. I'm just trying to get a rundown of where I can come up with big baits so when I start fishing I won't be wondering where to get bait. That is if they are not to expensive, I can go through alot of bait in a weekend.
Have you ever tried using some 4-6 in bullhead.... i switched from using big gills over to the bulls and i will never go back. Just clip the spines off and those buggers will stay alive all night and the flatties love them. Just toss a minnow trap in a little creek with something smelly a day or so before fishing and you will have dozens.
I have used bullheads and liked them. I never did clip the fins though, I figured they didn't get clipped when eaten in the wild. Very good bait. Although, I live at least 15 miles from my closest river spot I fish, so I like to have my bait when I set out. I'd hate to chance leaving my traps in the river and not catching any bait, not enough, or worse, my traps get stolen. I used to catch my bait a day or two before, kept it in my tank that I have and that way it was ready when I was ready. I made sure I had enough for a weekend, and if I did run out, I'd only need to catch a handful. I understand a lot of bloggers are tired of me whining about the bait laws, and ANS, but I think we as sportsman need to make our opinions know. This blog is for us to get vocal. These spots where fish can't be transported from alive, is the state going to put cleaning stations in? What about those of us who take pictures, show friends/family our catch? There is times when I'd catch fish late at night, put them in my tank and clean them next morning. This way I wouldn't disturb my neighbors late at night. I for one really don't want to have to clean my catch in the field, and then get in my truck all messy and smelly. Would our commissioners do this. Not to mention all the specialized gear I have acquired over the years. Boat for the river, air pumps, rods and reels, and other misc. items. These are things that I've purchased to increase my success catfishing, whether I'm using rod and reel or setlining. Maybe I need to look at my reciepts and present them to the commissioners. Maybe they'd reimburse me. Yeah right. The regulation changes still makes me sick!!!!!!!!
I'm with you on this Catman. These rules are forgetting one thing, the geese don't follow the rules.
Geese and other fowl carry eggs on there feet, why couldn't they carry a mussel that holds on? I know they'll say that I don't have a degree like they do, but not letting people take their fish home in water is the craziest idea ever. Are they trying to make us all quit fishing and set up camps for illegals at our public lakes or what? The American Sportsman
Great point American Sportsman, I hadn't thought of that. I tell you, mother nature moves more ANS than we sportsman do. Example, floods. There are a lot of low head dams on the Neosho river, and it only takes 3-4 feet of high water to move fish and other ANS upstream, or down stream. When these high waters overflow into fields, I can see birds transfering ANS easily. Or when the water begins to recede, some settles into ditches, which runs into different creeks. Therefore they are spread. I understand these are something we don't want. I understand that we need to do our best to curb the spread. The inevidible has happened, we now have ANS within our state. Highwater spreads more ANS than any human error can. There are a lot of waterways that run into our state from neighboring states, where some ANS have spread from. As I've said before,(and I know everyone is probably tired of hearing me)why completely change the rules and ruin traditions and opportunities for families to enjoy the outdoors. Not to mention the added expense to obtain bait from shops if they want to use it. Also to have to carry a card showing you purchased bait from a legal shop, this is just one more thing we sportsman have to worry about keeping straight as to be legal. I just believe they rushed to makes these changes, and didn't have the Kansas Sportsman's best interest in mind. Just saw on KDWPT's home page they are to make a dicission in the next week on the 65 and over licence expemption. I'd be willing to guarantee you seniors can kiss this perk goodbye. Thank you for paying taxes all your lives and buying licence's all those years. Sorry the state is going to stick it to you. Kansas Sportsman need to speak up, get loud, and voice our opionions!
catman, I totally agree we should raise our voices to the stupidity of the new regs. REALLY!!? If I want to catch perch out of a farm pond to use for flatheads I am violating the law!!!! Wake up Pratt are you guys that dumb? If they were going to make the rule then they should limit to the ANS not bait like shinners and perch. I was looking forward to some tailwater dam fishing this year but I probably won't now. Leave us alone Pratt! Find some common sense solutions to the ANS problems not this stupid stuff.
Hunt n fish-glad someone feels the same as I do.I live pretty close to the Oklahoma line, so I will be fishing there more. I will still fish Kansas, but man alive I don't know why the commissioners made such a split second dission on this. I imagine the state's gonna get sick of hearing me gripe, but I'm gonna let them know every chance I get. I emailed the commissioner that lives in Pittsburg before their "meeting" that decided the changes, I never got a response. Typical govt. official.
Might as well add limblining to next years agenda, the new regs will kill 75% or it anyway. To bad for traditions. Bullheads, large sunfish, baits of the past. Store bait is unreliable and unproductive. Gar love goldfish. Black salties won't make it alive to the river. Sunfish, if you can find them. Small and expensive. About the only live bait in the rivers I fish are small channel cats. Is that what I should use KDWP oh yeah and tourism. LOL
I totally agree. We use limblines a lot. We also use BIG baits, I really like using gills as big as my hand and bigger. Also green sunfish(aka Black Perch)as big as I can get. Also bullheads when we could catch them. Like you say, a thing of the past. We have never did very good on goldfish. Our local baitshop is closed on Sundays also. I've the only store live bait I've used is minnows when I fish for crappies. I've noticed a lot of store bought perch are little. There are times in the evening or on Sundays when we decide to go fish below a dam, or we need more bait for our lines, so we'd used to just go catch a few more. Not anymore. KDWPT doesnt understand how big of a bait a lot of us use. On our setlines, we use 16/0 circle hooks, and when we rod and reel fish, we use a 10/0 hook. These hooks take a big bait. I don't want to sound arrogant, but we are fishing for the biggest flathead in the body of water we're fishin at the time. I've been pondering it, and really don't know how to go about it, or if it's even possible, but looking into a pettion to repeal these regulation changes. Like I said, I don't know how to go about it or if it's even legal, just a thought. If anyone has an opinion or advice I'd sure like to have it. I wonder what some of the fisherman up around Topeka think, I understand there's a lot of flathead fisherman upthere. Not much chatter on their dock squawk.
KDWP hasn't left us with very many options have they? The river fisherman is going to have adapt. Current bait trap size will do you no good, a 1" opening won't allow a 6"-8" bluegill in. Seining and cast nets will not yield the baits we are looking for. What are we left with? Rod and reel. I don't know that I have time to catch bait out of the rivers I fish. Most of the time it would take me all day, and I would still come up short. It is sad that it came to this, I think it was rushed through with little regard for the striper and cat fisherman. And KDWP will never give it back. Meanwhile pleasure boaters will continue to run zebra mussels through their impellers, or attached to their boats and bunks. And the spread will continue.
The whole thing leaves a bad taste. And if you need a signature, I will be the first in line.
catman try goodluck bait in parsons they always havenaba big baits, and KDWPT you are iodiots, stupid bunch of crappy laws i ever heard of, mother nature spreads more crap from place to place than we do. i always follow your guidelines but this time i aint, i wil stil catch my bait where i have my entire life and i will still use them.....
