Anyone catching any white bass or crappie?

Anonymous said...

Attempted to see if any resident white bass or crappie were hitting in the cottonwood river above Marion last Thursday. Although I was aware of the extremely low water, decided to see if I could get in the river with my boat. Checked the end of the ramp at the blown out bridge and the river is way to low. DO NOT make the mistake several individuals have done in the past by driving off the end of the ramp. There is at least a foot drop off at the end. Unless you have a boat you can man handle, you cannot launch a boat here.(Unless we get substantial rain to bring the lake up)

Went fishing 4/29 in the evening about 7:00 on the dam. We caught 40 fish total. 3 Wiper, 7 crappie, (biggest 14 3/4"), and 30 whites. Smallest was 10".

Does anybody know how the fishing has been at Cheney? I am thinking about staying there for Memorial Day weekend. I have never been there before, and read that the lake is over 7 ft low. I don't have a boat, so is there still good shoreline fishing available with the lake being that low. Just wondering if it would be worth it since its a 3 hour drive one way for me. Thank you. Jeremy

@Jeremy
As of now, there is plenty of shoreline but you will have a long walk to the water. haha. Anyways, the marina area has been the ticket lately for fishing.

Why is it that reports done by Jessica are always way behind. Someone needs to do their job.

Anonymous - the reports were updated today. My apologies, it's been a busy summer. Please feel free to email me anytime, or give me a call with a fishing report!

Urban Channel Catfish: Cruiser (K-96) and Lake Afton were stocked with Channel Catfish today, Watson, Emery and N. Chisholm were stocked earlier this week and the other Wichita urban lakes will be stocked next week before the holiday weekend.

Fishing cheney lately for walleye. Been wading out into chest deep water casting into deeper water. Fish seem too be hard to come by after the front came through last week. Caught a couple with the biggest being 19" seems to be best on the north side of the lake on deep diveing crankbaits.

any big catfish in N. Chisholm.... catch nothing but small cats

Went pretty often in the last two weeks to Stone Creek in derby, bitin off worms, livers, and shrimp real well, the only problem is hookin the guys, seems they've gotten smarter than us, LOL.

Ones we caught were all 1 lb or higher.

What ever happen to the weekly fishing reports? I am wanting to go to Marion but not sure if I want to drive over an hour just to find out that the conditions are poor.

What's the deal out of Lake Afton? I've had the grumpy old man out there run me off for fishing because I didn't buy a vehicle permit- but according to their website, you don't have to buy a permit just to fish out there. I'm not the only one this has happened to, either.

The way I understand from past experiences is if extra permits/fees have to be paid before you fish in Kansas, the state is not obligated to stock or manage your fishing hole. I see that they stock Afton on a regular basis so fishing should be free assuming you have a fishing license. If Afton is getting stocked from other sources then extra permits/fees are allowed to be charged but fishing won't be as good.

Fishing around the wichita area has not been exciting at all. Literally no catches in three months—even where the report says "excellent". Gimme a break.

How far out are we from the Walleye spawn? Anyone heard/seen/know anything? Cheney, El Dorado, Marion... Thanks in advance...

I too would like to know when the walleye are going to spawn. I seem to miss it, or just catch the back end of it every year.

Jason and Laura, the walleye spawn is just around the corner. It usually starts up around the 3rd week of March in the western part of the state and ends mid-april in the eastern part. In this area, we're somewhere in-between. By the way, we've started a new page for 2014 questions here: http://ksfishing.blogspot.com/2014/01/region-4-fishing-reports-southcentral.html
